“a Lamp to my feet. a Light for my path.” – Philippians 1:20

.

TODAY’S WORD…

.

Avoid anything in your everyday lives

that would be unworthy of the gospel of Christ.

.

– Philippians 1:20 (TJB)

.

.

.

REFLECTION…

.

In other words, "Live like good citizens."

In addition to whichever positions we have in society,

we Christians are citizens of heaven

and therefore we should lead a life

that is worthy of the Gospel of Christ.

..

We must be like good citizens of the Kingdom of God, where Christ reigns as King,

by loyally obeying His laws.

..

Christ especially wants us to love one another,

because, such love encompasses all other precepts of the law.

.

.

.

QUOTE…

.

“Being a citizen of heaven

is quite compatible with being a citizen of human society:

to acknowledge God

is in no way to oppose the dignity of man,

since such dignity is grounded and brought to perfection in God.

.

We have in fact

been placed in society by God,

who created us as intelligent and free beings;

but over and above this

we are called, as sons and daughters, to intimacy with God

and to share in His happiness.”

.

– "Gaudium Et Spes” – Vatican II

.

.

.

REPETITIVE PRAYER FOR TODAY…

.

Have mercy on me, O Lord, and forgive my unworthiness.

“a Lamp to my feet. a Light for my path.” – 1 John 4:16

.

TODAY’S WORD…

.

And we ourselves know and believe the love which God has for us.

.

God is love,

and those who live in love live in union with God

and God lives in union with them.

.

– 1 John 4:16 (GNT)

.

.

.

REFLECTION…

.

“…those who live in love live in union with God

and God lives in union with them.”

.

Do I live in love?

.

Am I living in union with God,

permitting that God lives in union with me?

.

.

.

WHAT IS LOVE…

.

“Love is patient and kind;

it is not jealous or conceited or proud;

love is not ill-mannered or selfish or irritable;

love does not keep a record of wrongs;

love is not happy with evil, but is happy with the truth.

Love never gives up;

and its faith, hope, and patience never fail.

Love is eternal.” (St. Paul – 1 Cor 13:4-8a)

.

Do I “live in love”?

.

.

.

REPETITIVE PRAYER FOR TODAY…

.

Lord Jesus, come live in me, take over, and fill me with Your love,

that I may live in love

and in union with You.

“a Lamp to my feet. a Light for my path.” – Psalm 63:1-4

.

TODAY’S WORD…

.

O God, You are my God,

and I long for You.

My whole being desires You;

like a dry, worn-out, and waterless land,

my soul is thirsty for You.

.

Let me see You in the sanctuary;

let me see how mighty and glorious You are.

Your constant love is better than life itself,

and so I will praise You.

I will give You thanks as long as I live;

I will raise my hands to You in prayer.

.

– Psalm 63:1-4 (GNT)

.

.

.

REFLECTION…

.

Contemplate on the Lord,

desire Him,

never stop searching for Him everywhere

calling out His Name

…always thanking Him for all blessings received

as you faithfully seek His comfort and guidance through the storms of life.

.

The Lord is always there with You.

Praise Him, therefore, for His presence and His love,

thank Him for the great hope that only He brings,

and for His promise

of an everlasting life united with Him in His heavenly kingdom.

.

Lift up your hands to God and praise Him:

.

All glory be to the Father

and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning,

is now,

and ever shall be,

world without end.

Amen.

.

.

.

QUOTES…

.

“How is it, then, that I seek You, Lord?

.

Since in seeking You, my God, I seek a happy life,

let me seek You so that my soul may live,

for my body draws life from my soul

and my soul draws life from You”.

.

– St. Augustine

.

.

“The soul that truly loves God

cannot desire to be satisfied and content

until it has full possession of Him.”

.

– St. John of the Cross

.

.

.

REPETITIVE PRAYER FOR TODAY…

.

All glory be to the Father

and to the Son

and to the Holy Spirit.

As it was in the beginning,

is now,

and ever shall be,

world without end.

Amen.

“a Lamp to my feet. a Light for my path.” – James 2:14-18

.

TODAY’S WORD:

.

What good is it, dear brothers and sisters,

if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions?

Can that kind of faith save anyone?

.

Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing,

and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day;

stay warm and eat well”

– but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing.

What good does that do?

.

So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough.

Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.

.

Now someone may argue,

“Some people have faith; others have good deeds.”

But I say,

“How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds?

I will show you my faith by my good deeds.”

.

– James 2:14-18 (NLT)

.

.

.

REFLECTION…

ON FAITH AND DEEDS…

AND, IMPORTANTLY, ON THE CORRECT CHRISTIAN ATTITUDE TOWARDS REFUGEES…

.

Let us read today’s Word again:

.

What good is it, dear brothers and sisters,

if you say you have faith but don’t show it by your actions?

Can that kind of faith save anyone?

.

Suppose you see a brother or sister who has no food or clothing,

and you say, “Good-bye and have a good day;

stay warm and eat well”

– but then you don’t give that person any food or clothing.

What good does that do?

.

So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough.

Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless.

.

Now someone may argue,

“Some people have faith; others have good deeds.”

But I say,

“How can you show me your faith if you don’t have good deeds?

I will show you my faith by my good deeds.”

.

.

.

QUOTES…FOR DEEPER PERSONAL REFLECTION…

.

“‘For I was hungry, and you didn’t feed me.

I was thirsty, and you didn’t give me a drink.

I was a stranger, and you didn’t invite me into your home.

I was naked, and you didn’t give me clothing.

I was sick and in prison, and you didn’t visit me.’

.

I tell you the truth,

when you refused to help the least of these my brothers and sisters,

you were refusing to help me. ’"

.

– Our Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 12:42-43,45)

.

.

“Sell your possessions and give to those in need.

This will store up treasure for you in heaven!

And the purses of heaven never get old or develop holes.

Your treasure will be safe;

no thief can steal it and no moth can destroy it."

.

– Our Lord Jesus Christ (Luke 12:33)

.

.

“If someone has enough money to live well

and sees a brother or sister in need but shows no compassion

– how can God’s love be in that person?

.

Dear children, let’s not merely say that we love each other;

let us show the truth by our actions."

.

– St John the Apostle (1 John 3:17-18)

.

.

.

REPETITIVE PRAYER FOR TODAY…

.

Remove my self-centredness, O Lord, and make mine a living faith!

Change my priorities and direct my love towards those in need.

“a Lamp to my feet. a Light for my path.” – Luke 6:46

.

TODAY’S WORD…

.

Jesus said,

“Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord” and not do what I say?”

.

– Luke 6:46 (JB)

.

.

.

REFLECTION…

.

Jesus asks me to act in a way consistent with being Christian

and not to make any separation

between the faith we profess and the way we live:

"What matters is not whether or not we wear a religious habit;

it is whether we try to practice the virtues

and surrender our will to God

and order our lives as His Majesty ordains,

and not want to do our will but His." (St Teresa of Avila)

.

Do I truly embrace and accept Christ’s teachings

and am I prepared to persevere, at all costs, to put them into practice?

.

“Why do you call me, “Lord, Lord” and not do what I say?”

Do I have a personal relationship with Jesus?

Do I spend ‘quality time’ with Him?

Do I really know what He teaches?

Do I read and refer to His Gospels constantly,

as I ask Him to change me and strengthen my faith and resolve,

that I may obey Him whatever the circumstance

and whatever the consequence?

.

Do I embrace and seek to “practice the virtues”?

.

.

.

THE VIRTUES…from the Catechism of the Catholic Church…

.

1803

"Whatever is true, whatever is honourable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is gracious,

if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things." 1

.

A virtue is an habitual and firm disposition to do the good.

It allows the person not only to perform good acts, but to give the best of himself.

The virtuous person tends toward the good with all his sensory and spiritual powers;

he pursues the good and chooses it in concrete actions.

.

The goal of a virtuous life is to become like God. 2

..

1804

Human virtues are firm attitudes, stable dispositions, habitual perfections of intellect and will

that govern our actions, order our passions, and guide our conduct according to reason and faith.

They make possible ease, self-mastery, and joy in leading a morally good life.

The virtuous man is he who freely practices the good.

.

The moral virtues are acquired by human effort.

They are the fruit and seed of morally good acts;

they dispose all the powers of the human being for communion with divine love.

.

1805

Four virtues play a pivotal role and accordingly are called "cardinal"; all the others are grouped around them.

They are: prudence, justice, fortitude, and temperance.

"If anyone loves righteousness, [Wisdom’s] labours are virtues; for she teaches temperance and prudence, justice, and courage." 3

These virtues are praised under other names in many passages of Scripture.

.

1806

Prudence is the virtue that disposes practical reason to discern our true good in every circumstance

and to choose the right means of achieving it;

"the prudent man looks where he is going." 4

"Keep sane and sober for your prayers." 5

.

Prudence is "right reason in action," writes St. Thomas Aquinas, following Aristotle. 6

It is not to be confused with timidity or fear, nor with duplicity or dissimulation.

It is called auriga virtutum (the charioteer of the virtues);

it guides the other virtues by setting rule and measure.

It is prudence that immediately guides the judgment of conscience.

.

The prudent man determines and directs his conduct in accordance with this judgment.

With the help of this virtue we apply moral principles to particular cases without error

and overcome doubts about the good to achieve and the evil to avoid.

.

1807

Justice is the moral virtue that consists in the constant and firm will to give their due to God and neighbour.

Justice toward God is called the ‘virtue of religion.’

.

Justice toward men disposes one to respect the rights of each

and to establish in human relationships the harmony that promotes equity with regard to persons and to the common good.

The just man, often mentioned in the Sacred Scriptures,

is distinguished by habitual right thinking and the uprightness of his conduct toward his neighbour.

"You shall not be partial to the poor or defer to the great, but in righteousness shall you judge your neighbour." 7

"Masters, treat your slaves justly and fairly, knowing that you also have a Master in heaven." 8

.

1808

.

Fortitude is the moral virtue that ensures firmness in difficulties and constancy in the pursuit of the good.

It strengthens the resolve to resist temptations and to overcome obstacles in the moral life.

.

The virtue of fortitude enables one to conquer fear, even fear of death,

and to face trials and persecutions.

It disposes one even to renounce and sacrifice his life in defence of a just cause.

"The Lord is my strength and my song." 9

"In the world you have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world." 10

.

1809

Temperance is the moral virtue that moderates the attraction of pleasures and provides balance in the use of created goods.

It ensures the will’s mastery over instincts

and keeps desires within the limits of what is honourable.

The temperate person directs the sensitive appetites toward what is good and maintains a healthy discretion:

"Do not follow your inclination and strength, walking according to the desires of your heart." 11

.

Temperance is often praised in the Old Testament:

"Do not follow your base desires, but restrain your appetites." 12

In the New Testament it is called "moderation" or "sobriety."

We ought "to live sober, upright, and godly lives in this world." 13

.

To live well is nothing other than to love God with all one’s heart, with all one’s soul and with all one’s efforts;

from this it comes about that love is kept whole and uncorrupted (through temperance).

No misfortune can disturb it (and this is fortitude).

It obeys only [God] (and this is justice),

and is careful in discerning things, so as not to be surprised by deceit or trickery (and this is prudence). 14

.

.

1 Phil 4:8; 2 St. Gregory of Nyssa; 3 Wis 8:7; 4 Prov 14:15; 5 1 Pet 4:7; 6 St. Thomas Aquinas; 7 Lev 19:15; 8 Col 4:1; 9 Ps 118:14; 10 Jn 16:33; 11 Sir 5:2; cf. 37:27-31; 12 Sir 18:30; 13 Titus 2:12; 14 St. Augustine.

.

.

.

REPETITIVE PRAYER FOR TODAY…

.

Jesus, my Lord, grant me temperance and prudence, justice, and courage

that I may always demonstrate my love for You by acting as You want me to.

where does my help come from?
My help comes from the Lord,
the Maker of heaven and earth.

the Lord will watch over my coming and going

both now and for evermore.

“a Lamp to my feet. a Light for my path.” – Luke 6:20

.

TODAY’S WORD…

.

Jesus said,

“Blessed are you who are poor,

for yours is the kingdom of God.”

.

– Luke 6:20 (NLT)

.

.

.

REFLECTION…

.

This is the first beatitude expressed by Jesus,

as He addressed the issue of where true happiness is found.

The word ‘beatitude’ literally means happiness or blessedness.

.

Jesus’ way of happiness, demands a transformation from within

– a conversion of heart and mind

which can only come about through the gift of the Holy Spirit.

.

How can one possibly find happiness in poverty?

.

If we want to be filled with the joy and happiness of heaven,

then we must empty ourselves of all that would shut God out of our hearts.

.

Jesus promises that the joys of heaven will more than compensate

for the troubles and hardships we can expect in this world.

.

God will bless and grant happiness

to those who recognise Him as the greatest treasure possible

and who yearn for Him alone,

in spite of their worldly possessions, or the lack of them.

.

God will bless and grant happiness

to those who are poor “in spirit”

and who humbly acknowledge and confess their moral imperfections

and constantly feel a great longing and need for the Lord..

.

.

.

REPETITIVE PRAYER FOR TODAY…

.

Remove my worldliness and empty pursuits, O Lord,

that I may focus on You and be filled with Your love.

“a Lamp to my feet. a Light for my path.” – Luke 6:25a

.

TODAY’S WORD…

.

Jesus said,

“How terrible it will be for you who are full now,

because you will be hungry!”

.

– Luke 6:25a (ISV)

.

.

.

REFLECTION…

.

Our Lord here condemns self-indulgence,

that reckless inclination towards the gratification of the senses

– a very common vice which a Christian needs to be on guard against.

.

The fullness Jesus mentions

is the over-indulgence, immorality and decadence

produced by the vices of gluttony, greed and lust,

all of which are essentially derived from selfishness.

.

How terrible it will be for you who are full now,

that is, full of yourselves,

brimming with conceit, vanity, and pride,

and with no appetite for spiritual things,

and therefore who do not hunger and thirst after Christ,

and the grace that is in Him.

.

Because you will be hungry!

While the saints are feeding upon the joys and glories

of sharing eternity with Christ,

those who are self-indulgent and unrepentant in this world

shall have no share in such things.

.

.

.

QUOTE…

.

“This is what the LORD says:

‘See, my servants will eat, but you’ll go hungry;

my servants will drink, but you’ll go thirsty;

my servants will rejoice, but you’ll be put to shame.”

.

– Isaiah 65:13

.

REPETITIVE PRAYER FOR TODAY…

.

Come Lord Jesus, and save me from myself. Come.

“a Lamp to my feet. a Light for my path.” – Matthew 1:16

.

TODAY’S WORD…

.

…and Jacob was the father

of Joseph the husband of Mary

– of her was born Jesus,

who is called Christ.

.

– Matthew 1:16 (TJB)

.

.

.

REFLECTION…

.

Mary – of her was born Jesus

who is called Christ..

Mary was born

to bring Jesus into the world.

.

God, who we believe knows all things from before the beginning of time,

knew when He created her

what role she would play in salvation history.

And when she uttered “yes”

to the Angel Gabriel,

she began that work He predestined for her.

.

She continues to work even today,

bringing Christ to us,

and us to Christ.

.

While in Mary we find

a supreme model of love and compassion,

we also find

that she points us to an even better one:

to Christ Himself.

.

And so, she is really all about Him!

.

.

.

REPETITIVE PRAYER FOR TODAY…

.

Holy Mother of God, turn your merciful eyes to me.

O sweet Lady of tenderness, bring me close to Jesus.

“a Lamp to my feet. a Light for my path.” – 2 Corinthians 13:11

.

TODAY’S WORD…

.

Brethren, be joyful.

Try to grow perfect;

help one another.

Be united;

live in peace,

and the God of love and peace will be with you.

.

– 2 Corinthians 13:11 (TJB)

.

.

.

REFLECTION…

.

Joy is something

which should be very characteristic of us Christians

because of our awareness of being children of God,

which tells us that we are in His hands

– in the hands of the One

who knows everything

and who can do everything.

..

Therefore, we should never be sad.

On the contrary:

we should reflect Jesus

and the joy, love and peace

which only He brings.

.

.

.

QUOTE…

.

"Live in peace,

and the God of love and peace will be with you,

for God is a God of love and a God of peace,

and in these He takes His delight.

It is love that will give you peace… "

..

– St. John Chrysostom

..

..

“My children,

only if you have in you

this divine grace

which is joy and peace,

will you be able to do anything useful for others."

..

– Blessed John Paul II

.
