“a Lamp to my feet. a Light for my path.” – Ephesians 3:14-21

TODAY’S WORD…

…I kneel before the Father,

from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name.

I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power

through His Spirit in your inner being,

so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith.

.

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love,

may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people,

to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ,

and to know this love that surpasses knowledge

– that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.

.

Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine,

according to His power that is at work within us,

to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations,

for ever and ever! Amen.

POPE FRANCIS REFLECTS ON THIS PASSAGE…

.

Speaking on this passage, Pope Francis tells us

that the language that Paul uses is, in fact, “a timeless language, a grandiose, expansive language:

Paul speaks of the riches of God’s glory;

he speaks of comprehending the breadth, the length, the height, the depth;

to know the Christ who surpasses, the Christ who causes us to be filled with all fullness.”

Indeed it is “a timeless language, incapable of being understood in the sense of comprehending”,

because it is “almost without a horizon”.

.

Paul “adores this God who is able to accomplish far more than all we ask or imagine,

according to that power the He has even in time, for all generations, for ever and ever”.

It is an outright “act of adoration, an experience before this God

who is like a sea without shores, without limits, an immense ocean”.

And “Paul’s heart, his soul, kneel before God”.

.

“In this act of adoration”, the Pope Francis affirms,

“Paul tells us of the Father, of the Son and of the Holy Spirit”.

And “what does Paul ask, for himself, for the Church … and for all of us?”.

.

Turning to “the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named”,

Paul asks first “to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner self”.

.

Beyond this he asks “the Father that the Spirit come and strengthen us, give us might”.

He knows well that “one cannot go forward without the Spirit’s might.

Our might is weak. One cannot be a Christian without the grace of the Spirit”.

Indeed, “it is precisely the Spirit who changes our heart,

who enables us to go forward in virtue in order to fulfil the Commandments”.

.

Then, Paul “asks for another grace of God, but through Christ:

that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith”,

and thus be “rooted and grounded in love”.

He basically “asks for the presence of Christ,

that He may make us grow in charity, but rooted in love, grounded in love”.

.

And also, he asks the Father for the ability

“to comprehend … the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge”,

which is beyond comprehension.

.

But then, “how can I understand what is beyond comprehension?.

Paul’s answer is clear: “Through this act of adoration of that Great Immensity”.

.

The Apostle affirms that the Father is able to do “far more than all we ask or imagine”. Even miracles, of course.

“But we cannot imagine what the Father can do by the power at work within us”.

Paul then ends this adoration with praise: “to Him be Glory…forever and ever”.

.

Pope Francis explains that before us is the “mystical experience of Paul,

who teaches us the prayer of praise and the prayer of adoration”.

Thus, “before our smallness, our selfish interests (so many!) Paul bursts out in this praise, in this act of adoration”.

And he “asks the Father to send us the Spirit to give us the strength and power to go forward;

that He enable us to comprehend the love of Christ and that Christ strengthen us in love”.

And he says to the Father: “Thank you, because You are able to do what we do not even dare to imagine”.

.

This “is a beautiful prayer” of Paul’s, whose words also apply to us today

because “it’s good for us to think this way, it’s good for us, too, to praise God”.

Yes, “it does us good to praise God,

to enter into this expansive world of grandiosity, of generosity and of love”.

.

And, Pope Francis concludes,

“it does us good because in this way we are able to go forward in the great Commandment

– the one Commandment that is the basis of all the others –

which is love: love God and love your neighbour”.

Come, Holy Spirit, and help me grasp

how wide and long and high and deep is Jesus’ love for me.

Come, Holy Spirit, that I may seek to love like Jesus. .

Lifestyle, lifestyle, lifestyle!

Keeping up appearances

is, unfortunately, what life is very much about

for many these days.

.

We can tell how men and women look…on the outside.

People-watching has become a popular pastime

especially for those who like to gossip.

God, on the other hand, knows what people are like…inside.

He judges us by what’s in our heart.

.

We so often end up forming a mistaken judgment of character.

The Lord, on the other hand, values only the faith, reverence, and love,

which are to be found in a person’s heart,

and which are beyond the discernment of humans.

.

With God, it is our internal lifestyle that matters.

.

.

.

REPETITIVE PRAYER FOR TODAY…

.

Lord Jesus, help me always be at my best – internally…for You.

TODAY’S WORD…

.

Jesus warned,

“There will always be temptations to sin,

but what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting!”

.

– Luke 17:1 (NLT)

.

REFLECTION…

.

We must not tempt others by any means,

and bring them to do what is morally wrong and sinful.

.

If we, through entrapment, charm, allure or seduction,

suggestion or encouragement,

deceit or whichever act

persuade and cause others to do wrong (in deed or in thought),

and to break any of God’s commandments,

we will be gravely responsible for our action.

.

The person who leads others into sin,

by whichever means,

destroys their souls.

Such action disrupts, corrupts, defiles and ruins.

.

That is why God is so opposed

to anyone who tempts others to sin,

and why these are so guilty in His eyes.

That is why Jesus is so definite when He warns:

“what sorrow awaits the person who does the tempting!”

.

Lord, help me always spread love and virtue…and never immorality.

TODAY’S WORD…

Jesus said,

“I have come to call

not those who think they are righteous,

but those who know they are sinners.”

.

– Mark 2:17 (NLT)

REFLECTION…

.

Our Lord calls everyone.

How, then, can we explain

the restriction He seems to place here

when He says He has not come to call the righteous?

.

It is not really a restriction.

Here Jesus takes the opportunity to warn the proud

– those who consider themselves just,

and who think they can be saved by their own efforts.

.

Our Lord’s words

are an invitation to repentance.

In fact, St. John Chrysostom explains this verse

by putting these words in Jesus’ mouth:

"I am not come that they should continue sinners

but that they should change and become better."

.

.

.

PRAYER…

.

My Lord and my God,

I beseech You,

open my eyes and let me see my weaknesses;

soften my heart and help me humbly admit my wrongs;

penetrate my inner being and remove all my selfishness.

.

Lord, make me a better person

and rid me of all that is not from You,

and replace it with Your love.

.

Forgive me, Lord.

Heal me, Lord.

Thank You, Lord.

REFLECTION…

.

The decision to lead a full Christian life

calls for an on-going effort, day in day out,

to practice all the virtues.

It involves the whole person

– soul and body, mind and will.

.

Forgiveness

is one characteristic of the true Christian.

Forgiveness

is an expression of Christian love,

which imitates Christ

and brings about harmony.

.

Forgiveness, meekness, patience, and gratefulness

all reflect an essential virtue – humility.

. .

Only a humble person can be both forgiving and truly grateful,

because only such a person realises

that everything one has comes from God.

.

This realisation

leads us to be understanding towards others,

forgiving them as often as needs be.

.

By acting in this way, we will be proving

the genuineness of our faith,

and of our love…for Jesus.

.

to publically share His greatness with others.

The Lord’s Word is there,

.for anybody who wants to listen to it.

.

The Lord is always there,

right beside all who want to be with Him.

.

Do I ever stop, amongst all the noise,

to listen out for God’s voice

and to see what He wants of me?

.

If He was speaking to me now,

would I know it?

Would I be able to hear His voice?

Would I recognise His voice?

Would I care?

.

We need to stop

…and to go to that quiet place

and spend some time seeking our Lord

…in silence

…focusing on Him

…and listening out for His voice.

.

He does not always speak to us,

but being with Him

…in silence…

is a blessing in itself.

.

REFLECTION…

.

Christ is persecuted,

till this very day!

Even in countries with deep Christian roots,

an aggressive form of secularism is emerging

to the exclusion of God, religion and virtue

from public life.

.

Those seeking to stick to Christian principles

and who try to follow Jesus’ teaching,

are being increasingly rejected

and often scoffed at and insulted.

.

The Christian who follows Jesus

tries to live in a manner which appears to go contrary to what society is doing.

This is why, often, those of us who do not go with the flow

are being regarded with disdain.

.

However, in spite of growing provocation,

we must gladly stand up and be counted.

We must never be ashamed of the Gospel,

which is the wisdom and power of God.

.

But we must also be loving and gentle

in our response,

and to be so, we need to be strong…in our faith!

.

.
